Overseas service stations introducing pump-like EV chargers

Shell’s first EV charging stations look like gas pumps.

The oil giant earlier announced plans to put EV charging sites in Britain and the Netherlands, Electrek reports.

It says a first look shows they’re just like gas pumps.

As electric cars increase in popularity, gas stations will be forcefully downgraded to convenience stores and consequently will lose significant revenue from people normally stopping to get gas, Electrek says.

Shell is hoping customers will stop to get a recharge instead.

Allego was contracted to deploy and operate the new chargers.

One was seen by Tesla owner Dave Davies for the first time last weekend at a Shell station in Warlingham, 30 minutes south of London.

He tweeted some photos.

It features 3 ports for maximum compatibility: a CHAdeMO DC fast-charging port, a CCS DC fast-charging port, and a regular Mennekes (Type 2) port.

With 25,000 Shell-branded gas stations in the world, it would significantly increase the electric vehicle charging infrastructure if they decide to deploy stations at every location – though it’s unlikely at the moment, Electrek says.

“Gas stations wouldn’t necessarily be EV drivers’ first choice to stop to get a charge, but the more stations the better it will be for the adoption of electric vehicles.”
