Porsche to supercharge its own network

Porsche plans to establish its own super-fast electric vehicle charging network in Australia.

According to the company’s comments made at the Geneva Motor Show this week, the Mission E electric supercar will instigate the charging network to rival Tesla.

The German sports car maker says its dealership-based charging stations will have three times the output of Tesla’s Superchargers, using an 800-volt battery array in its vehicles, double that of conventional EVs, which reduces recharge times.

The Mission E will be able to refuel in a claimed 15 minutes to offer 400km of range, compared with Tesla’s hour and a half.

Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume (pictured) says Australia needs a network similar to Europe, with Melbourne to Sydney the first priority, The Australian

reports.

“When you want to go from Sydney to Melbourne for the main roads you need some sections with a charging opportunity — the same idea we have in Europe,” Blume says.

“We need charging infrastructure not only in the homes of our Porsche fans, but also public ones.”

By design, Tesla Model S, Model X and Model 3 would be restricted from using the Porsche network.

A joint venture with Volkswagen AG, Daimler Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Ford will see Porsche establish 400 charging stations across Europe.
