Fiat Chrysler to make more electrified cars

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne has announced investment plans for more than 30 electrified cars during his final major presentation before retiring next year.

In plans unveiled through to 2022, FCA will invest nine billion euros in fully electric and hybrid vehicles, including four Jeep SUVs, four Maserati models and two Fiat cars – most expected to go to China.

Alfa Romeos launched in the next five years will also have an electrified powertrain version.

The Jeeps are reported to include possible all-electric models of the Cherokee or Commander, and the Compass, Wrangler or Renegade.

Maserati models will include a fully electric Alfieri coupe, while Ram utes are expected to include just hybrids.

Only the Fiat 500 family is expected to get full plug-in or all-electric treatment, some reports say.

FCA also says internal combustion engine vehicles will continue to be produced.

Marchionne has been critical of EVs, but FCA is moving to catch up, mainly because of tougher emission standards around the world.

Fiat’s e500 and Chrysler’s Pacifica Hybrid van are probably FCA’s most important electrification efforts, Electrek reports.

Up to 62,000 Pacifica Hybrid vans will be added to Alphabet’s Waymo for a US robotaxi service planned later this year.
