Submissions closing on Welllington’s 34 street charging sites

Public submissions on street EV charging at 34 residential sites close on July 13 with the Wellington City Council.

Each site will have two chargers.

Locations have been selected where residents seeking a public charging station near their home have formally responded to the council’s on-street charging trial.

Each location has also been picked where there are a dozen or more homes nearby that lack off-street parking, so that the charger will be valuable to many local residents in the future.

The chargers, installed and operated by ChargeNet NZ, will take up about as much space as a pay and display parking machine.

These are suitably compact to ensure walkers, prams, scooters, and wheelchairs retain good footpath access, the council says.

ChargeNet NZ seeks support from Wellington EV owners – or those who would like an EV – to make this project a reality.

A draft submission suggested by ChargeNet NZ could be along the lines of: “Dear Wellington City Council. Regarding 34 Traffic Resolutions numbered TR69-18 through TR102-18.

I support all of the above proposals by Wellington City Council to install electric vehicle chargers and make the car parking there for electric-vehicles only.

(Further personal reasons, optionally, e.g. that these chargers remove a barrier as they will be in areas where homes lack the ability to charge overnight, and, they raise visibility which will increase the numbers of electric vehicles in Wellington.

Proposed charger locations based on where residents have applied include Boundary Rd, Kelburn; Holloway Rd and Epuni St, Aro Valley; Stafford St and Austin St, Mt Victoria; The Crescent, Roseneath; Marewa Rd, Hataitai; Duncan Tce, Kilbirnie; Miramar North Rd, Miramar; Sutherland Rd, Lyall Bay; View Road, Houghton Bay; Hornsey Rd, Melrose; Jackson St, Melbourne Road and Mersey St, Island Bay; Owen St, Coromandel St (2) and Hall St, Newtown; Wright St and Nairn St, Mt Cook; Fanham St, Mornington; Clarence St, Karepa St and Bruce Ave, Brooklyn; Stanley St, Berhampore; Grant Rd, Wadestown; Napier St, Karaka Bays.
