Former All White and Werder Bremen football player Wynton Rufer is recovering from a heart attack in Auckland.

The 56-year-old was rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest while riding a Lime e-scooter home from a Breakers game against the Perth Wildcats at Spark Arena in Auckland on Sunday, national and international media report.

He was in a coma until Tuesday and has recovered to the point where he could soon return home.

A German man on his own scooter accompanying Rufer called for help and one person began resuscitating him while an ambulance was on its way, according to Stuff.
