Video: Autopilot credited with ‘saving’ Tesla drivers

A Tesla Model 3 owner in the US says its Autopilot saved him by swerving to avoid a car in front after his Tesla was rear-ended and shunted towards it on a highway.

The owner, who says he bought the Model 3 in March, posted a video on Reddit from the vehicle’s dash camera.

He says initial damage estimates from the rear collision are around US$16,000.

The driver, who doubts he had actively engaged the Tesla’s Autopilot prior, says the Autopilot took over and managed to evade the car in front.

An increasing number of Tesla owners have been reporting that Autopilot enacted safety features have helped them avoid crashes or worse damage and potential injury.

One Model 3 owner even stated the Autopilot had saved his life after a near miss.

In the latest incident, no one was injured but both vehicles had to be towed.
