‘Moving e’ FCEV bus will offer emergency power

Toyota and Honda will create a mobile power generation system, Moving e, to deliver power during emergencies.

The fuel cell (FCEV) bus can carry a large amount of hydrogen, portable external power output devices and portable batteries for when power grids are damaged, such as during storms.

Demonstration testing of the system’s ability to deliver electricity anytime and anywhere starts in September.

The Moving e comprises Toyota’s charging station FCEV bus, Honda’s Power Exporter 9000 portable external power output device, two types of Honda’s portable batteries(LiB-AID E500 and Honda Mobile Power Pack), and the  Honda Mobile Power Pack charge and supply concept charger/discharge.

It can be used to support disaster response by supplying electricity in an affected area and to evacuation centres, as well as in normal times for routine uses such as supplying power at an event.

The FCEV bus can also feed electricity to electrical appliances.

It has been developed from the Toyota FC Bus, but the Moving e has twice as many high-pressure hydrogen tanks that significantly increase the amount of hydrogen it can carry, enabling it to feature a high-output and large-capacity power generation capacity (454kWh with maximum output of 18kW).

The FCEV bus even has space where people can rest.

It can be deployed within about 100km radius of a hydrogen refuelling station, uses about 490kWh maximum electricity (240kWh when the bus is driven 200km both ways).

Toyota and Honda will verify the effectiveness of the Moving e mobile power generation/output system as a phase-free system through various uses by municipalities and businesses which the companies say fulfil the necessary conditions and are willing to cooperate with testing.

That’s likely to see it largely Japan based.
