PM and Neve likely to try Audi e-tron

Further confirmation three Audi e-trons are being trialled in the New Zealand government’s fleet as ministerial cars has fuelled speculation prime minister Jacinda Ardern and toddler Neve may try one out.

Media here and in Australia report Ardern and Neve could try one of three electric Audi e-trons touted as possible replacements for long wheel-based diesel sedans in the fleet, especially as one e-tron is based in Ardern’s home city Auckland with the other two in Wellington.

The three e-trons were introduced in the first quarter of this year, Audi New Zealand general manager Dean Sheed telling EVs and Beyond

about it in August and then in the September

magazine, and he says he’s yet to learn when the trial finishes – possibly by this Christmas.

Depending on the trial result – and Sheed says he’s had positive feedback on the e-trons so far – more of the government’s fleet could be switched to e-trons.

“That would mean a change of body style to SUV and a different powertrain,” Sheed says.

As to whether Neve will ride in one, Sheed says all three e-trons have fittings suitable for a child’s safety seat.

Ardern already has an electric Hyundai Ioniq family car, often used by her partner Clarke Gayford.

But Sheed reckons Ardern will probably try the e-tron as the cars are used for shuttles between airports and functions.

“It’s a signal that the government is looking to change its fleet,” Sheed says of the trial.

“The government is now walking the talk (on electrification).”

Sheed’s hoping the trial will lead to many in the government’s fleet being replaced with Audi e-trons.

That would fit with the New Zealand Government Procurement’s aim to have the government’s fleet emissions-free by 2025-2026.
