It’s priced from $74,990 and includes a free home Wallbox charger worth $2000 for early adopters.

The brand’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV) has been created in response to the increasingly high demand for EVs and uses Mazda’s experience in developing a range of industry first initiatives aimed at combatting climate change.

Equipped with e-Skyactiv – Mazda’s new electric drive technology – the MX-30’s front-wheel-drive powertrain combines a 107kW AC synchronous electric motor with a 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery, giving the new SUV more than 200km range (NEDC) and 0-100km/h acceleration in 9.7 seconds.

Mazda designers and engineers took the time to produce a vehicle that meets the evolving lifestyle needs of today’s car buyers, Mazda New Zealand managing director David Hodge says.

“People are more aware than ever before of environmental issues and more discerning when it comes to buying products or services.

“They are also looking for companies that are authentic about making change,” Hodge adds.

“We believe the Mazda MX-30 will appeal to mainly urban private buyers who want a vehicle that looks great and delivers a fantastic driving experience while at the same time matching their lifestyle and reinforcing their core values.”

The MX-30 has the minimalist look of a stylish two-door SUV coupe with a distinct sense of openness and freedom.

Its battery can be charged to 80% within about 40 minutes using DC rapid charging.

In combination with the new SUV’s comprehensive i-Activsense safety systems, it offers customers a quiet seamless driving experience, Mazda says.

The cabin has a driver-centric cockpit featuring heritage cork – a natural, sustainable raw material used in the centre console tray and door grips.

The premium vegan leatherette doesn’t use organic solvents in the production process and is finished with a silicon coating. About 20% of the interior fabrics are recycled and the breathing fabric used on the upper section of the door trim uses fabric made from recycled plastic bottles.

“The interior provides a very relaxed environment that puts the driver at the heart of all the action and the use of different materials gives the cabin a unique feel,” Hodge says.

The Mazda MX-30 is in four exterior colours, two of which feature three-tone colours featuring a black roof with a silver metallic tone for the roof sides.

The Mazdacare programme provides a five-year warranty and five-year Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance.

The battery has an eight-year/160,000km warranty, while the five-year/100,000km Genuine Mazda Scheduled Servicing is at no extra cost.

Mazda will also fund five native NZ trees for every MX-30 sold in conjunction with Trees That Count – holding top spot with 76,000 native trees to date.
