Hyundai Nexo joins Queensland Police
A hydrogen fuel-cell Hyundai Nexo has joined Queensland Police as part of the deployment of five Nexos into the Queensland government fleet.
It has a full Queensland Police Service body wrap, lights and sirens, refuelling at the Queensland government’s hydrogen station in Brisbane.
The Nexo’s deployment means Queensland Police will experience the benefits of a zero-emissions fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) during general duties while showcasing the technology to the public.

It’s the first FCEV police car in Australia and in the Southern Hemisphere, highlighting Hyundai and the Queensland government’s commitment to hydrogen, and takes the national fleet to 28 alongside the 20 Nexos rolled out to the ACT government and emergency services in 2020 and the Nexos stationed at Hyundai’s head office in Sydney.
Hyundai Motor Company Australia, the government and stakeholders are working to implement Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to establish Australia at the forefront of the global hydrogen industry by 2030.
The Nexo’s inclusion in the Queensland Police is a further step towards a clean motoring future, Hyundai Motor Company Australia chief executive Jun Heo says.
It offers 666km range (WLTP) with a refuelling time of three to five minutes, purifiying the air as it drives and emitting only water vapour from its exhaust.
The ANCAP five-star safety rated Nexo is the first government-certified FCEV for use on Australian roads and combines clean mobility with the latest autonomous driving capabilities and smart advanced driving assistance systems.
