Ports of Auckland’s Sparky gets official blessing

The world’s first full sized ship-handling electric tug, named Sparky, has been blessed by local iwi at the Ports of Auckland.
The ceremony was held on August 8 to bless Sparky prior to operational use and to officially hand her over from manufacturer Damen.

Ngati Whatua Orakei chair Marama Royal was appointed Sparky’s godmother and give Sparky her Maori name, ‘Tiaki’.
The ceremony also included deputy Dutch ambassador Maartje ten Brummelaar, mayor Phil Goff, Auckland Central MP Chloe Swarbrick and other key councillors and dignitaries.
