The first of the refurbished #LeadingTheCharge EV road trips is now open for participant registrations.

The road trips, run by the Better NZ Trust, are a traditional part of the NZ EV calendar since the first trip from Bluff to Cape Reinga in 2016.

Trustee and organiser of the “Mackenzie Country EV Road Trip” Martin Kane (EV World NZ Champion 2018) explains that the next series of road trips will be short, sharp and allow participation by more people.

“This particular family-friendly trip is under 400km over a weekend from June 23 to 25,” he says.

Starting in Oamaru with a Friday night dinner, participants can visit Steampunk HQ before entering the new UNESCO Geopark and exploring Elephant Rocks, Vanished World Centre and the Takiroa Maori Rock Drawings.

Crossing the Aviemore hydro dam takes the trip to the lesser-travelled side of the lake, returning back to the state highway by crossing over Benmore – the largest earth dam in New Zealand.

The following day sees visits to Mount Cook and Mount John before the trip concludes in Fairlie on the Sunday evening.

“Participants pay their own way as they go, because not all travellers will choose to do every event,” Kane says.
