$20m hybrid-electric ferry for Auckland

A 300-passenger hybrid-electric ferry for the Devonport to downtown Auckland run from 2026 has been commissioned by Auckland Transport (AT).

It’s the fourth low-emission ferry ordered for the region, including two all-electric vessels being built by EV Maritime at Auckland boat builders McMullen and Wing due next year.

AT has signed $20 million contracts with Whanganui-based Q-West Boat Builders and Christchurch-based HamiltonJet for the second hybrid-electric ferry, with another due in 2025.

The latest ferry deal is part of AT’s “Mission Electric” where it is now only buying electric trains, buses and ferries for public transport.

The 32-metre ferry can fit about 28 bikes and has more passenger capacity than current vessels.

Fullers360 is project managing the build with Q-West, HamiltonJet and Australian-headquartered engineering firm Incat Crowther, on AT’s behalf.

Funding sees 49% from Auckland Council’s Climate Action Targeted Rate and 51% from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
