Paris bans rental e-scooters

Electric scooter rental companies Lime, Dott and Tier expect to remove their e-scooters from Paris streets by September 1 following the city’s ban on such rentals.

Private e-scooters will continue to be used in the city though, and the three companies are reportedly planning to increase their e-bike offerings in Paris.

Paris is one of the few European cities to ban e-scooter rentals, mainly for safety reasons, after about 90% of Parisians surveyed voted against rental e-scooter use in the city.

However, the three companies say only 7% of eligible people participated in the April “for or against” referendum.

E-bikes are expected to replace the 15,000 rental e-scooters before the summer Olympic Games in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

Other French cities are expected to continue with e-scooter rentals, although fears exist the ban may spread.
