MG’s new XPower sets new performance/value mark

Right45°web1-1

MG Motor New Zealand has seemingly rewritten the book on how much bang someone can get for their buck – and done it with an EV.

With a 0-100km time of 3.8 seconds the MG4 XPower offers a performance level not seen this side of the six-figure priced Tesla Model 3 Performance.

The numbers for the small-to-medium size hatchback are impressive. Dual-motor all-wheel drive, with a combined power output of 320kW and 600Nm.

An all-new Dynamic Cornering Control System will be available for the first time on an MG, featuring a locking electronic differential and Intelligent Motor Control to allow torque vectoring between all four wheels.

The suspension has been treated to recalibrated spring and damper tuning, stiffer anti-roll bars and sharper steering. Overall suspension stiffness has been increased by up to 25%.

Increased stopping power reduces the 100-0km/h stopping distance to just 33.9 metres, generated via uprated, ventilated 345mm discs on all four corners, with new premium Bridgestone Turanza tyres.

The 64kWh battery is also capable of recharging at up to 140kW, meaning a charge time of only 26 minutes from 10% – 80% using a 150kW DC rapid charger. The WLTP range figure is 385km.

The price? $69,990 before the government’s Clean Car Discount. MG NZ is taking expressions of interest from tomorrow – Friday October 6. Delivery dates are being kept hush but it will be within 2023.

It gets a few other enhancements over the more ‘normal’ MG4 models, with orange ‘XPOWER’ brake calipers, a two-tone black roof, new 18’’ alloy wheels and polished trim accents, alongside an exclusive new Hunter Green colour option.

MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO Peter Ciao says the new MG4 XPower is proof that EV performance can be affordable.

“The MG4 XPOWER has supercar acceleration and is packed with features, including launch control, showing that a compact EV can be affordable, practical and spirited to drive.”

MG New Zealand Country Manager, Arek Zywot, shared a similar sentiment.

“There are very few performance vehicles on the market today, let alone with zero-emissions, which deliver the sheer acceleration the MG4 XPOWER is capable of.

“This type of ‘push you back in the seat’ experience has previously only been available in cars costing significantly more than this new model. This new EV makes a real statement in terms of performance as well as price, as it is available from less than $70,000* and is also eligible for the full Clean Car rebate.

“It promises to be one of the most exciting new electric cars of 2023.”
