Air New Zealand purchases its first electric aircraft

Air New Zealand has purchased an all-electric ALIA aircraft which will initially be used as a cargo only service in partnership with NZ Post.

Designed by US-based aerospace manufacturer Beta Technologies, the battery-powered conventional take-off and landing aircraft is expected to join the fleet in 2026.

The deal includes options for an additional two aircraft, and rights for a further 20 aircraft.

A first commercial demonstrator flight is planned from 2026 and Air New Zealand begins replacing its Q300 domestic fleet with a more sustainable aircraft (likely green hydrogen or battery hybrid systems) from 2030.

In partnership with NZ Post, expressions of interest (EOI) process with airports across the country are taking place to select initial cargo routes for the electric aircraft.

Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran says the purchase cements the airline’s commitment to flying lower-emissions aircraft.
