Honda considers $22b EV production in Canada
Honda may build an EV factory in Canada – its second in North America.
So says Nikkei adding the project could involve in-house production of batteries.
It estimates the project may cost NZ$22 billion (two trillion yen), which would make it “one of Honda’s largest investments as it hopes to catch US and European rivals in EV production”.
Honda is considering several potential sites, including next to an existing automobile factory in Ontario, and expects to decide by the end of 2024 with the new facility to go onstream as early as 2028, Nikkei explains.
The Japanese automotive company already intends making EVs and batteries in Ohio starting 2025.
Canada recently announced a proposal to stop sales of fossil fuel new passenger vehicles in 2035.
Honda can increase chances its EVs produced in Canada will be eligible for the US EV subsidies by procuring key battery materials such as lithium from within Canada, says Nikkei.
The Japanese brand is expected to reveal its new EV series at CES 2024 January 10-12 at Las Vegas.
