Ford of Europe has unveiled the new Capri, a mid-size five-door crossover electric vehicle with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive options.

The Blue Oval says the new Capri reimagines its European ‘Pony Car’, which it produced from 1969 to 1986, and it employed football icon Eric Cantona to launch its new EV with the tagline, “Je suis Capri.”

The Capri uses the same MEB platform as the Europe-only electric Ford Explorer SUV and the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5. It will be built in Ford’s newly reconfigured electric plant in Cologne, Germany.

Bringing back a legend such as the Ford Capri is a big deal. We’re excited that the new all-electric Capri is ready to bring some swagger to the world of EVs and introduce a whole new generation of drivers to the spirit of a cult classic,” Ford Blue and Model E Europe general manager Jon Williams says.

From the side profile, the new Capri shares a flat roof and angular rear haunches reminiscent of the Polestar 2.

In Europe, the new Ford EV is offered in two trims: Capri and Capri Premium. The 210kW/545Nm rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model has a 77kWh battery, and the 250kW/545Nm all-wheel-drive (AWD) model has a 79kWh battery.

Standard specifications include keyless entry and start, heated front seats, steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and driver’s seat with massage and memory function.

Ford’s SYNC Move 1 technology allows the 14.6-inch centre screen to slide up and down for the most comfortable viewing angle.

Smartphones integrate using wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A wireless device charger is also standard.

The Capri has up to 572 litres of boot space, a foldable boot floor, a 17-litre MegaConsole beneath the front armrest, 12 ultrasonic sensors, five cameras and three radars – support advanced driver assistance technologies, including Assisted Lane Change and Clear Exit Warning.

The Capri RWD can drive more than 620 km on a single charge. Charging from 10-80% takes 26 minutes using a 185 kW DC fast charger for the Capri AWD.
