Ario e-scooters now in Christchurch

Ario e-scooters Christchurch (Feb 4, 2025)

Christchurch is the first New Zealand city to have Ario e-scooters after a five-year licence was granted by the Christchurch City Council, the e-scooters launched there on February 4, 2025.

Since shared micro mobility was introduced in 2018, Christchurch has faced challenges with blocked footpaths, but Ario’s technology directly tackles these issues, says the company, adding 360-degree cameras and artificial intelligence-based assessments automatically identify and assess incorrect e-scooter usage such as dangerous riding, tandem riding or mistreatment of the device.

An e-brake and three mechanical brakes provide improved stopping power, reducing collision risks, says Ario.

It says there will be faster resolution of parking complaints, improved accessibility for vulnerable groups including those with low vision, improved stability through Ario’s three-wheel design and advanced suspension system, and automatic detection of unsafe placements and incorrectly parked e-scooters.

“We’re ecstatic that Christchurch has chosen Ario, giving locals and tourists the chance to experience something truly different,” says Ario New Zealand and Australia general manager Adam Rossetto.

He says Ario’s e-scooter improves balance and enhances overall control.

Ario says it has designed the e-scooters with the community at its core, integrating advanced features to enhance the riding experience.

They are equipped with pedestrian detection, helmet unlock-to-ride technology, artificial intelligence (AI) driven footpath recognition, and real-time compliance monitoring.

Ario says it will employ a local workforce to manage daily operations, creating jobs and fostering economic growth within the community.

The e-scooters are available across Christchurch from New Brighton Beach to Wigram, and from Bishopdale to Sumner.
