Kia PV5 WAV EV for wheelchair users
Kia showcased its PV5 WAV (wheelchair accessible vehicle) at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit (London, May 13-15) in collaboration with United Kingdom -based Motability Operations.
The PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) WAV uses EV architecture to address challenges faced by wheelchair users, their families, caregivers and drivers, says Kia, adding features include a side-entry system, a third-row tip-up seat allowing caregivers to assist wheelchair passengers from the side, and kerb-side access for improved safety, convenience and accessibility.

Kia aims to expand its PBV WAV to other global regions as a sustainable mobility solutions provider.
“The PV5 WAV is more than just a vehicle; it’s a gateway to independence and freedom for those with mobility challenges,” says Kia PBV division head and executive vice president Sangdae Kim.
“By integrating cutting-edge Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) technology with thoughtful design we are paving the way for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of sustainable mobility, and our partnership with Motability Operations is a testament to our commitment to making this vision a reality.”
Kia says the PBV WAV is a response to increasing worldwide demand for accessible vehicles, adding the introduction of eWAV options is of vital importance with the sector’s continued growth projected to clash with the planned phasing out of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that would usually be converted into WAVs.
The vehicle will enable users to enjoy more convenient, comfortable and accessible travel while seamlessly transitioning to electric mobility, says the brand.
The PV5 WAV side-entry variant will be manufactured at Kia’s Hwaseong EVO Plant in Korea and includes a quick-use 300kg-rated wheelchair entry ramp and a specially developed wheelchair belt fastening system.
It will also integrate necessary applications for individuals with disabilities, based on the AAOS open software platform.
