Alpine reveals A390 electric SUV

French performance brand Alpine has taken the wraps off its first fully electric SUV — the A390 — marking a bold step into the high-performance EV segment and a new chapter for the brand once best known for lightweight sports coupes.
The A390 arrives with a sophisticated tri-motor powertrain, high-speed charging capabilities, and advanced chassis tuning — all wrapped in a sleek fastback SUV silhouette designed to take on the likes of the Porsche Macan EV and Lotus Eletre.
Tri-motor setup and serious speed
Under the skin, the A390 shares its platform with other Renault Group EVs (notably the AmpR Medium architecture) but pushes performance further thanks to a three-motor setup — one on the front axle and two at the rear — giving the SUV real-time torque vectoring and precise all-wheel drive dynamics.
Two versions will be offered:
- GT: 295 kW (400 hp), 650 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 4.8 seconds
- GTS: 346 kW (470 hp), 808 Nm, 0–100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds
Both variants are powered by an 89 kWh battery, offering competitive range and charging capability. Using DC fast charging at up to 190 kW, the A390 can go from 15% to 80% in under 25 minutes.
Built for drivers
While SUVs aren’t typically Alpine’s territory, the A390 is still very much a driver’s car. Engineers have dialled in a 49:51 front-to-rear weight balance and lowered the centre of gravity using a compact e-motor and floor-mounted battery, all to deliver cornering composure more commonly associated with hot hatches or sports cars.
It also features a unique OVR (Overtake) Boost function activated from the steering wheel — delivering short bursts of additional power for quick manoeuvres, or just fun.
Drive modes include a Track mode for circuit use (yes, really), alongside Sport and Normal settings.
Sleek design, focused cabin
Design cues from the Alpine A110 are clearly visible in the A390’s flowing bodywork — from the sculpted bonnet and four-eye LED signature to the low, raked roofline and wide stance.
Inside, the cabin features twin digital displays running a Google-based infotainment system, and in GTS trim, Sabelt sports seats deliver proper driver support. The materials are a mix of premium eco-leathers and recycled composites, part of Alpine’s sustainability push.
Global EV ambitions
Set to be built at Alpine’s Dieppe plant in France, the A390 will launch in Europe in mid-2026, with a global rollout to follow. While New Zealand timing hasn’t yet been confirmed, Alpine’s recent push into right-hand drive markets makes the A390 a strong candidate for local release.
Indicative European pricing puts the A390 at around €70,000–€85,000, which would see it land in New Zealand from approximately NZD $135,000, depending on final spec and taxes.
EVs & Beyond Take:
The A390 isn’t just another legacy badge going electric — it’s a signal Alpine wants to carve out a real presence in the premium performance EV space. If it drives as well as its specs suggest, the Porsche Macan EV might finally have a genuine challenger.
