Meridian opens fast-charging EV hub at Auckland Airport
Meridian Energy has launched its first fast-charging hub at Auckland Airport, marking a significant step in the company’s goal to become New Zealand’s largest public EV charging provider.
Located in the Auckland Airport Shopping Precinct, the new hub features five DC fast chargers delivering up to 160kW, each equipped with two charge points to allow up to 10 vehicles to charge at once.
The site also includes dedicated accessible chargers and a drive-through option for EVs towing trailers, boats or caravans.
“As New Zealand’s largest city and the leader in EV adoption, Auckland is the ideal place for us to launch Meridian’s first fast-charging hub,” Meridian public charging product manager Joanna Yip says.
“Auckland Airport is a high-traffic gateway for both locals and international visitors, so it’s the perfect location to showcase our commitment to decarbonisation and driver-centric design.”
The facility includes dynamic power allocation to reduce queuing and improve efficiency, as well as CCS and CHAdeMO connectors to suit a wide range of electric vehicles. Two chargers have been designed specifically to improve accessibility, featuring ample space for wheelchair users and adjustable screens for varying heights.
“We’ve designed this hub to tackle real pain points for drivers — especially queuing.
“We’ve listened to the EV community and built a site that’s accessible, efficient and supporting communities to decarbonise,” Yip says.
All energy delivered through the hub is matched with Certified Renewable Energy generated by Meridian’s hydro stations and wind farms. Charging at the site also helps fund community decarbonisation projects via Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy programme.
“We’re aiming to become the largest public EV charging provider in the country, and planning to expand its Certified Renewable Energy product across our public charging network so this launch is just the beginning,” Yip says.
