EO to end smart support for Mini Pro 2 chargers, sparking backlash
British EV charging company EO has announced it will end global support for its EO Mini Pro 2 charger and associated Smart Home app — a decision that has sparked backlash from customers, including in New Zealand, and prompted a response from local distributor YHI.
The decision follows the introduction of the UK Smart Charge Point Regulations in 2022, which rendered the EO Mini Pro 2 non-compliant for continued sale or replacement in Great Britain, the company says.
EO has confirmed it will disable the charger’s smart functionality worldwide from November 30, 2025, even in countries where the regulations do not apply.
After that date, the Mini Pro 2 will operate only as a basic “plug and play” device, and the EO Smart Home app will no longer function. EO says it will also stop providing repairs, parts or software updates for the device.
“Due to the EO Mini Pro 2 no longer meeting the necessary smart functionality requirements for sale or replacement in Great Britain, we will no longer be able to provide repair services, replacement parts or software updates,” the company said in a message to customers.
Support for in-warranty units will continue until November 30, 2025, and customers with warranties extending beyond that date are being asked to contact EO by August 5, 2025.
While the changes stem from British regulations, EO said it had made the decision to apply them globally.
YHI Energy, the main distributor of EO chargers in New Zealand, says it is disappointed by the global decision.
“YHI New Zealand are disappointed to see EO decide to end the cloud services for the EO Mini Pro 2,” says YHI Energy divisional manager Aaron Gillon.
“We understand this will impact our customers, and we are currently working with EO to explore the best options for the products in the New Zealand market.
“We remain committed to supporting our customers through this transition and are happy to assist with any questions you may have.”
The announcement has prompted a wave of criticism from Mini Pro 2 users on social media, many of whom say they feel misled by the product’s lifespan and loss of key features.
“I don’t think anyone reasonable would expect a £500–£1000 EV charger to have a durability of only a few years before key functionality is withdrawn,” one user commented.
“We bought a product with certain functionality and they’re removing that functionality for no good reason that I can see,” another wrote.
Others cited consumer protection laws, with one user saying: “I’ve just gone through to support and quoted the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which says that items should work for ‘a reasonable length of time’. Four years for a £600 charger is not reasonable to me.”
Another simply said: “Pretty annoyed with this I must say.”
