Nissan is readying the next generation of Nismo performance models, and this time they’re going electric — with race-bred technology from its Formula E programme playing a leading role.

As the only Japanese manufacturer in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, Nissan has spent years developing and refining high-performance EV systems under real racing pressure. Now, those lessons are feeding directly into the brand’s future road-going EVs, especially the Nismo range known for motorsport DNA.

Key innovations include twin-motor all-wheel drive, ultra-fast torque vectoring, improved regenerative braking strategies, and lightweight battery modules — all proven through seasons of international electric competition. By the time Gen4 Formula E debuts in 2026 with even more power and efficiency, Nissan aims to have corresponding Nismo road models in development or on sale.

Although Nissan hasn’t named which EVs will get the Nismo badge first, the Ariya SUV and upcoming Leaf successor are likely candidates. Expect bold styling, performance upgrades, and motorsport-inspired handling dynamics — all wrapped in zero-emission packages.

For New Zealand drivers, that means Nissan could soon offer an alternative to performance EVs from Tesla, Hyundai’s N division, or even Polestar. It’s a significant move from a brand that already has a strong Kiwi following — and one that could make EV ownership even more exciting.
