Tesla’s new Model Y Performance gets major power boost
Tesla has pulled the covers off the facelifted Model Y Performance, hot on the heels of last week’s rollout of its self-driving technology.
The new twin-motor version is quicker than ever, with Tesla claiming a 0-100km/h sprint of just 3.3 seconds. That’s faster to the open road speed limit than a Porsche 911 GT3, a BMW M5 or an Audi RS6 – and at a considerably lower price. A sports suspension set-up is also part of the upgrade.
Available to order in the UK now, with deliveries starting in October, the flagship Model Y has undergone a substantial redesign to distinguish it from the standard version.
It shares technology with the Model 3 Performance and uses a pair of Performance 4DU motors producing 343kW, compared with 280kW in the former Model Y Long Range AWD. Top speed is listed at 250km/h. For comparison, the outgoing Long Range managed 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds, while the Model 3 Performance can hit the mark in 3.1 seconds.
Tesla says the Performance model features a new “high-density” battery cell, allowing it to almost match other variants on range despite the extra power. Maximum range is quoted at 576km, though the battery capacity has not been disclosed.
The model also borrows adaptive dampers from the Model 3 Performance, retuned for the heavier Y, along with new suspension, staggered wheels and tyres.
Exterior changes include a more aerodynamically efficient front bumper, a diffuser at the rear, a carbon-fibre wing, 21-inch alloys and red brake calipers.
Inside, there’s a larger 16-inch touchscreen with enhanced resolution. Heated and ventilated front sports seats come with added bolstering to handle the car’s extra performance.
Built at Tesla’s Brandenburg factory near Berlin, the Model Y Performance will launch first in Europe and the Middle East before reaching other markets.
The range also expands with a new entry-level variant and a long-wheelbase, six-seat version, initially available only in China.
