Weatherell Transport trials fully electric semi-trailer
Weatherell Transport has begun trialling a fully electric semi-trailer, supplied by Fruehauf.
The Schmitz Cargobull S.KOe trailer features a high-voltage battery system, an electric refrigeration unit and an e-axle generator that harvests energy while driving, eliminating the need for a diesel generator.
“This cutting-edge trailer combines a high-voltage battery system, electric refrigeration, and an e-axle generator that harvests energy while driving — all without the need for a diesel generator,” Weatherell Transport chief operating officer Richard Moorcroft says.
“It’s a bold step toward reducing emissions while keeping goods cool, safe, and moving efficiently.
“With integrated telematics including real-time temperature control, geofencing, and tyre pressure monitoring, the S.KOe is built for performance, sustainability, and smarter transport.
“We’re excited to be part of shaping the future of logistics in New Zealand.”
The trailer includes advanced telematics for real-time monitoring, geofencing and tyre pressure tracking, aimed at improving efficiency and security in refrigerated freight. It has a 26-pallet deck and a 32kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery that stores harvested energy when driving above 60km/h or braking.
Fruehauf marked the local launch of the Schmitz Cargobull S.KOe in August last year, saying the technology is aimed at sustainable, efficient transport. Customers were invited to register interest in trialling the new product.
Schmitz Cargobull is the first manufacturer to receive European-type approval for a trailer using this technology, and the S.KOe has been recognised with the European Transport Sustainability Award 2024 in the semi-trailer category.
