Xpeng confirms NZ launch with Auckland showroom by year’s end

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng will enter the New Zealand market in late 2025, opening its first showroom in Auckland with sales, service and test drive operations.

The Auckland site marks the first step in a wider rollout, with additional locations planned for Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga and Hamilton from early 2026.

“New Zealand is a natural launchpad for Xpeng’s operation, given its market’s strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and premium driving experiences. These are values that align perfectly with our DNA,” says Damian Royce, head of marketing for Xpeng’s New Zealand operations.

“We are confident we can deliver world-class service and accelerate EV adoption across the country.”

Regional expansion strategy

The New Zealand debut forms part of a wider move by Xpeng to take direct control of its operations in Australasia. In Australia, the brand is expected to assume factory control of distribution from TrueEV by the end of 2025.

Former GWM Australia chief operating officer Hidesuke Takesue has been appointed to lead the business across both Australia and New Zealand, with a factory-owned subsidiary now being established locally.

The shift to factory distribution is expected to unlock a “new model rush” in the region. Alongside the G6 medium SUV already sold in Australia, the X9 people-mover is tipped to be among the first additions, with other models such as the G9 and G7 SUVs, the Mona M03 hatchback and the P7+ sedan also under consideration.

Technology focus

Founded in 2014, Xpeng positions itself as a smart EV brand, developing in-house driver-assistance software, an intelligent in-car operating system and core vehicle systems including powertrains and electrical/electronic architecture.

Its next-generation E/E architecture enables rapid over-the-air updates, scalable performance and connected services.

In China, Xpeng has recently begun rolling out range-extender powertrains in addition to its battery-electric line-up. Industry observers expect this technology could eventually be offered in Australia and New Zealand, broadening the appeal of the brand in markets where long-distance driving and charging gaps remain challenges.

Xpeng has also made clear it sees itself as a “future mobility explorer,” investing not only in EVs but also in robotics and flying cars through its AeroHT division.

The Auckland dealership will showcase the brand’s latest technology, offer test drives and provide aftersales support. Further details on dealership locations and vehicle range will be confirmed closer to launch.

Xpeng is headquartered in Guangzhou with additional offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Silicon Valley and Amsterdam. Its vehicles are manufactured in Zhaoqing and Guangzhou. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: XPEV) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX: 9868).
