Geely launches Starray EM-i hybrid SUV from $45,990

Geely New Zealand has launched the Starray EM-i, a mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV priced from $45,990 that introduces the brand’s Super Hybrid technology to the local market.

The model arrives in New Zealand dealerships from November and represents Geely’s second offering locally, following the brand’s entry through the Giltrap Group’s NordEast distribution division in August.

Jordan Haines, Brand Manager of Geely New Zealand, says the Starray EM-i launch marks a pivotal moment for the brand in New Zealand.

“The Geely Starray EM-i demonstrates our commitment to achieving price parity between electrified vehicles and internal combustion engines,” Haines says. “Backed by Geely’s global innovation leadership, the Starray EM-i brings world-class hybrid technology to New Zealand at an attainable price point, ensuring more Kiwis can experience the benefits of electrification sooner.”

The Starray EM-i is available in two variants: the Complete from $45,990 and the Inspire from $49,490, both plus on-road costs.

Super Hybrid system delivers 943km range

The Starray EM-i uses Geely’s EM-i (E-Motive Intelligence) system, combining a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with an 11-in-1 electric drive unit containing two electric motors. The electric system produces 160kW of power and 262Nm of torque, with power sent to the front wheels.

An 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack supports the hybrid system and provides Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality with a maximum power output of 6kW. The system delivers a combined range of up to 943km (WLTP) and can travel up to 83km on pure electric power alone.

The hybrid system offers three driving modes: Pure for electric-only operation, Hybrid for seamless switching between electric and petrol power, and Power mode where both systems work together for maximum performance.

Charging is available via AC (6.6kW) or DC (30kW) power, with the 18.4kWh battery charging from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes using DC fast charging.

The Complete variant includes a 15.4-inch infotainment screen running Geely’s Flyme operating system, surround-view monitor, wireless Apple CarPlay, six-speaker sound system, automatic climate control, LED headlights, satellite navigation, and heated front seats.

The Inspire variant adds a 16-speaker Flyme sound system, panoramic powered sunroof, head-up display, front seat ventilation, driver’s seat memory, power tailgate, and 256 ambient colour lighting options.

Both variants come with comprehensive safety equipment including seven airbags, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistant, blind spot detection, and surround view monitor.

Launch package and warranty coverage

Geely is offering a launch package running until December 31 2025 that includes a three-year complimentary service plan, premium paint valued at $950, and 15,000km of Road User Charges.

Every Starray EM-i comes with a seven-year unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty and an eight-year unlimited kilometre warranty on the high voltage battery pack. Up to seven years of roadside assistance is included when consistently serviced within the Geely dealer network.

The launch follows NordEast’s goal to deliver 5000 electrified vehicles to the New Zealand market within three years across six Geely Group brands.

The Starray EM-i will be available in dealerships for customer enquiries and test drives from late September, with first deliveries scheduled for November.
