BMW-iX1-eDrive20-1

BMW Group New Zealand has recorded a 58.9% increase in fully electric vehicle (EV) registrations through September 2025, contributing to the company’s strongest year-to-date sales performance since 2021.

BMW registered 321 fully electric vehicles in the nine months to September, up from 202 in the corresponding 2024 period. MINI’s electric performance was even more dramatic, with a 236.4% surge to 259 EV registrations compared with just 77 in 2024.

The electric vehicle growth helped drive overall BMW Group New Zealand registrations up 23% to 2150 vehicles across both brands, significantly outpacing the broader New Zealand automotive market’s 14.5% growth rate.

BMW registrations increased 24% to 1411 units compared with 1137 in 2024, while MINI achieved a 21% rise to 739 registrations from 613.

Individual electric models show strong gains

BMW’s electric model lineup showed impressive individual performances, with the iX2 up 600%, the iX increasing 191%, and the iX1 growing 36%. Other growth drivers included a 57% gain for the 1 Series Hatch and double-digit increases for the X1 and X2. The BMW X3 recorded a 140% increase and is positioned for further growth following the recent addition of the X3 20 xDrive petrol offering.

All three MINI models recorded notable volume increases. The MINI Countryman was up nearly 24% year-to-date, with 379 total registrations including 128 of the fully electric variant. The first-ever fully electric MINI Aceman achieved 77 registrations to the end of September, while the MINI Cooper recorded 251 registrations across three- and five-door configurations, marking a 9.1% increase. Of those Cooper registrations, 56 were the fully electric version.

Francois Roca, who became Managing Director of BMW Group New Zealand in July, says achieving the best year-to-date result since 2021 reflects a strategic approach to planning and market delivery.

“This is a very positive outcome that reflects a close collaboration between the head office and our highly professional dealer network to deliver an exceptional customer experience,” Roca says.

“We look forward to continuing this strong momentum to the end of 2025, supported by our evolving and diverse product portfolio and with additions such as the BMW X3 20 xDrive that provide a new entry point for customers.”

BMW Group New Zealand supports electrified vehicle adoption through a public destination charging network spanning both North and South Islands. More than 100 chargers have been installed and are accessible not only to BMW and MINI owners, but also to any motorists with compatible charging hardware.
