Dongfeng Motor has officially launched in New Zealand with three fully electric models, led by the compact BOX which becomes the only new electric vehicle (EV) available under $30,000.

Armstrong’s Distribution unveiled the Chinese brand’s local lineup at an Auckland launch event, with CEO Simon Rutherford describing it as “the very beginning of what Dongfeng can bring to the New Zealand market”.

“We accept we’re a challenger brand,” Rutherford says. “Yes, we’re starting with three EVs, but Dongfeng’s reach is far beyond that. This is a multi-energy, multi-brand, multi-segment company — and our goal is to deliver parity-plus value to New Zealand customers.”

The Dongfeng BOX is priced at $29,990 plus on-road costs, rising to $32,990 after 31 January 2026. The five-door hatch fills a segment that has been without an affordable EV option for nearly two years.

The BOX uses a 43.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery delivering 317 km WLTP range. Power comes from a 70 kW/160 Nm front-mounted motor, giving 0–50 km/h acceleration in 4.6 seconds and a 140 km/h top speed.

Charging options include 6.6 kW AC home charging and 60 kW DC fast-charging, allowing a 30–80% top-up in about 30 minutes. The system uses air-cooled battery thermal management, which Dongfeng says is tuned for long-term reliability.

At 4020 mm long with a 2663 mm wheelbase, the BOX sits between a Fiat 500e and MG4 Excite in size. Boot space ranges from 326 litres to 945 litres with 180-degree fold-flat front seats, and the cabin offers genuine five-seat accommodation.

Standard features include a 12-inch HD touchscreen, 5-inch digital driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six-way power driver’s seat with heating and ventilation, and 32-colour ambient lighting. Safety equipment includes automatic parking, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking.

Two additional models will join the range in the first quarter of 2026. The Dongfeng Vigo SUV features a 120 kW/230 Nm motor, 51.9 kWh LFP battery, and around 340 km WLTP range. DC fast-charging takes it from 30–80% in 18 minutes, and it includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) external power capability.

The Dongfeng 007 flagship sedan offers two variants. The Standard Range model delivers 200 kW rear-wheel drive power and 540 km WLTP range, while the Long Range dual-motor version produces 400 kW/640 Nm and achieves 0–100 km/h in under four seconds. Both use a 73.5 kWh LFP battery.

Dongfeng Motor Corporation is one of China’s four major state-owned automakers, operating since 1969 and producing over 2.5 million vehicles annually across more than 100 markets. The company employs 121,000 people, holds 20,000 patents, and maintains 14,000 research and development staff, with partnerships including Honda, Nissan, Peugeot, Citroën, and Infiniti.

Rutherford says the brand introduction represents a long-term commitment to the New Zealand market.

“We know the BEV market isn’t heading in the right direction,” he says. “To grow it, we have to make EVs more accessible — both in price and in purchase.”

“We’re not here for a short-term splash. This is about bringing quality, intelligence, and emotion to the EV market — and making sure every Kiwi can truly drive their dreams.”

All Dongfeng models are covered by a six-year/200,000 km vehicle warranty, eight-year/200,000 km traction battery warranty, and six years of roadside assistance. Armstrong’s has partnered with Heartland Bank to offer Dongfeng Finance, providing personal loans and leases, with a Guaranteed Future Value product planned for early 2026.

Dongfeng dealerships are now open in Auckland (Greenlane), Wellington (Lower Hutt), and Christchurch (Central City).
