Lexus RZ arrives with steer-by-wire technology
Lexus has confirmed the arrival of the all-new RZ in New Zealand, introducing the brand’s first steer-by-wire system paired with yoke steering technology.
Vehicles are now arriving at Lexus dealerships nationwide, with the electric SUV making its first public appearance at the recent ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland.
The RZ becomes the first Lexus model to adopt steer-by-wire technology, which removes the traditional mechanical steering connection and allows the system to respond more naturally to speed and driving conditions.
“The new RZ is a big step forward for Lexus electrification,” says Andrew Davis, Vice President of Lexus New Zealand. “It delivers more power, improved range and faster charging, while introducing steering technology that genuinely changes how the vehicle feels to drive.”
The steer-by-wire system is fitted as standard on the RZ 550e F SPORT and available as an option on the RZ 500e Dynamic. When paired with the compact yoke steering wheel, drivers can achieve full steering lock without crossing hands, making low-speed manoeuvring easier while delivering better precision and stability at higher speeds.
Davis says the technology also creates more space in the cabin. “The yoke gives you a clearer view ahead and more space in the cabin, and despite being new technology, it feels natural from the first drive.”

Performance and charging improvements
Performance has increased across the range, with the RZ 550e F SPORT producing a maximum system output of 300kW, making it the most powerful RZ in the New Zealand lineup. The RZ 500e Dynamic delivers 280kW, an increase of 50kW over the previous model.
The RZ 500e Dynamic features a 74.69kWh lithium-ion battery, while the RZ 550e F SPORT uses a larger 76.96kWh battery pack. Both models benefit from a revised battery electric system and a 22kW onboard AC charger for improved charging performance.
Lexus has also introduced enhanced battery thermal management to optimise charging performance across a wider range of conditions for everyday use.
“Around town it feels light and precise, and on the open road it’s smooth and stable,” Davis says of the driving experience.
The RZ 550e F SPORT brings additional performance-focused features, including sports suspension tuning, aerodynamic detailing and Lexus’ Interactive Manual Drive system, which enables drivers to select an eight-speed virtual gear system via paddle shifters.
“The updated RZ delivers improved real-world driving range, alongside faster and more consistent charging,” Davis says.
The cabin retains Lexus’ focus on quiet comfort and premium materials, with a clean, driver-focused layout inspired by the tazuna concept. “This is still very much a Lexus,” Davis says. “You get advanced technology and strong performance, but it’s delivered with the comfort, quality and attention to detail our customers expect.”
The all-new RZ is available in three variants, with the RZ 500e Dynamic priced from $109900, the RZ 500e Dynamic with steer-by-wire at $119900, and the RZ 550e F SPORT at $134900.
