BYD will bring a significantly updated version of its popular Atto 3 electric SUV to New Zealand in the second half of 2026, with major technical improvements that represent a fundamental shift in the model’s engineering approach.

The updated model, marketed as the “Atto 3 Evo” in European markets, abandons the current front-wheel drive layout in favour of rear-wheel drive – a move that aligns it with BYD’s premium models like the Seal sedan.

A spokesperson for BYD New Zealand has confirmed the revised Atto 3 will be available locally in the second half of 2026, though final specifications for the New Zealand market remain unclear.

The switch to rear-wheel drive sees the standard model utilise a more powerful 230kW/380Nm motor on the rear axle, paired with BYD’s new 800-volt electrical architecture. This enables DC fast charging up to 220kW – nearly three times faster than the current model’s 80kW capability.

European models come with a larger 74.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery that provides a driving range of 510km under WLTP testing, representing a significant improvement over the current Atto 3’s range figures.

BYD has also introduced a new range-topping 330kW all-wheel drive variant, though the New Zealand spokesperson indicated this model remains “unlikely” for the local market.

The technical upgrades come alongside a more mature interior approach. While the updated model gains a larger 15.6-inch infotainment screen and 8.8-inch digital cluster, it has shed some of the original’s quirky design elements – including the guitar string-inspired door trim that became a talking point among current owners.

The infotainment screen has also lost its rotating function, now remaining fixed in landscape orientation, and comes with built-in apps rather than relying solely on smartphone connectivity.

Styling updates include sharper front-end design and new knot-style taillights at the rear, building on the familiar Atto 3 aesthetic while giving it a more refined appearance.

The new E-Platform 3.0 architecture has created additional storage space, with boot capacity increasing by 50 litres to 490 litres with seats in place. The updated model also gains a 110-litre storage compartment beneath the front bonnet – a feature absent from the current model.

European specifications include wireless smartphone charging, heated front and rear seats, and a head-up display, though these features may vary for New Zealand models.

The current Atto 3 has been one of BYD’s most successful models in New Zealand since its local launch, competing in the popular compact electric SUV segment. The updated version’s move to rear-wheel drive and faster charging capabilities suggest BYD is positioning it to compete more directly with premium European rivals.
