Armstrong’s Distribution CEO Simon Rutherford has confirmed Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand Arcfox will launch in New Zealand, with arrival expected in late 2026 or early 2027.

Speaking at the BAIC launch event in Auckland, Rutherford said Arcfox has been integrated into dealer and distribution planning as a straightforward addition alongside the newly launched BAIC operation.

“We could go anywhere between the end of this year and early next year,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is establish BAIC first.”

Arcfox, which is owned by BAIC, will arrive with pure electric and electric range-extender powertrains, contrasting with BAIC’s hybrid and internal combustion engine launch strategy. Rutherford said the staggered approach reflects market realities and the need to balance Armstrong’s growing roster of Chinese brands.

Strategic launch timing under consideration

Rutherford’s preference is to launch Arcfox with two models simultaneously, which would push timing to the second quarter of 2027. A single-model launch could see three nameplates in the BAIC-Arcfox stable by the end of 2026.

While Rutherford did not specify which Arcfox models are under consideration, the brand’s current lineup offers several candidates for the New Zealand market.

The Alpha T5 mid-size SUV appears the most likely starter, given its alignment with New Zealand buying preferences. The model is available in both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) configurations.

The T5 measures 4760mm long on a 2845mm wheelbase. BEV variants offer CATL-supplied battery options of 64.8kWh, 74.4kWh and 79.2kWh, delivering CLTC ranges of 560km, 660km and 705km respectively.

The range-extender version pairs a 1.5-litre generator with a 27.4kWh battery for 215km of electric range and a combined total of 1215km. All versions produce 200kW and 360Nm, with the REEV managing 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

The T5 sits on an 800V platform supporting fast charging from 30 to 80 percent in 15 minutes. The Alpha S5 sedan, also built on 800V architecture, could complete a two-model launch.
