Chinese carmaker claims 1,500km range from new solid-state battery by 2027

Chinese carmaker Changan says it is developing a solid-state battery capable of delivering more than 1,500km of driving range in an electric vehicle by 2027.

According to Chinese reports, the battery — branded ‘Golden Bell’ — has an energy density of 400Wh/kg, placing it at the upper end of current solid-state technology.

Vehicles equipped with the battery are expected to travel more than 1,500km on a single charge.

Changan says the Golden Bell battery is 70% safer than a conventional EV battery and will incorporate artificial intelligence-based remote diagnostics as part of its safety systems. The battery will be produced under the company’s Jingzhongzhao sub-brand.

Changan is not alone in pushing toward mass production of solid-state batteries.

Dongfeng has reportedly been testing its in-house solid-state battery in extreme cold conditions earlier this year. That unit has an energy density of 350Wh/kg and is said to be capable of delivering up to 1,000km of range.

Dongfeng is planning to begin fitting the batteries to production vehicles from September.

A growing number of manufacturers are investing heavily in solid-state battery technology, including Chinese brands such as BYD as well as established global carmakers such as Mercedes-Benz.
