NZ may have to wait for Geely EX5’s bigger battery

New Zealand buyers could be waiting until late 2026 to get their hands on Geely’s updated EX5, which now packs a larger 68.39kWh battery in place of the original 60.22kWh unit.

The upgrade has already landed in Australia, where it adds up to 45km of WLTP range across both variants. The EX5 Complete now claims 475km (up from 430km) and is priced at A$41,990, while the EX5 Inspire sits at 450km (up from 410km) for A$45,990. Both cop a A$1000 price bump for the bigger pack.

But for Kiwi EV buyers, the timeline is less clear. Geely brand manager Jordan Haines, from distributor NordEast, says discussions are ongoing and the updated model is likely a late-2026 proposition for New Zealand.

Interestingly, Haines also hints that the local lineup could look different to Australia’s, with the company still working through whether New Zealand will get standard and extended-range battery options rather than a straight like-for-like upgrade.

“(We are) still finalising what the EX5 range will look like in terms of standard vs extended range battery,” he says.

On the spec front, the Australian model now includes a cargo blind and Mode 2 charging cable as standard, and there’s a new Jungle Green premium paint option carried over from the Starray EM-i. Whether those additions flow through to the NZ-spec car remains to be seen.
