ChargeNet launches Autocharge

ChargeNet has launched Autocharge, a feature that eliminates the need for apps, cards or screen interactions when charging compatible electric vehicles (EVs) on its network.

The system automatically initiates charging once a compatible EV is plugged into a supporting ChargeNet fast charger, removing what the company calls “friction points” in the charging experience.

“Autocharge makes charging on the ChargeNet network as simple as possible. It’s designed to remove those small frictions points and make EV charging even easier,” says ChargeNet Head of Growth & Commercial Roberto Balzarelli.

The feature is currently available at most ChargeNet DC fast-charging sites and supports CCS plug-type vehicles. Some chargers and vehicle models are not yet compatible, and CHAdeMO vehicles – including Nissan Leafs – do not support the feature.

Once set up through the ChargeNet app, Autocharge works automatically in the background, allowing drivers to step away during charging sessions without needing to monitor the process.

Early users call it “magic”

Balzarelli says customer response from early access users has been positive, with the feature changing how people experience EV charging.

“For compatible vehicles, Autocharge genuinely changes the EV experience for the better. Our customers who’ve had early access have really enjoyed it – one even called it ‘magic’, and many have told us that this is the way charging should be,” he says.

The initial release targets everyday EV drivers and can be enabled through the ChargeNet app once a compatible vehicle has been detected charging on the network.

Balzarelli says making charging feel easier is an important step in helping EVs fit seamlessly into everyday life, particularly as more New Zealanders make the switch to electric vehicles.

To enable Autocharge, customers need to register their vehicle in the ChargeNet app and switch the feature on when prompted.

ChargeNet operates New Zealand’s largest nationwide EV charging network with more than 520 rapid DC charging points from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Since 2015, the network has powered over three million charging sessions as part of supporting New Zealand’s transition to a net-zero emissions economy.
