First drive: Volvo EX90 electric flagship

The Volvo EX90 has arrived in New Zealand later than originally planned, but the delay has delivered benefits for local buyers. Models arriving from April feature an updated 800V electrical system for faster charging and improved efficiency.
Volvo Cars New Zealand is positioning the EX90 as the brand’s new flagship, with pricing starting at $149,990 plus on-road costs for the Plus Twin Motor AWD and $159,990 plus ORCs for the Ultra Performance AWD variant.
The company sees strong demand in the premium electric vehicle (EV) segment, according to Brand Manager Daile Stephens.
“Looking at the total market versus the premium market, from a premium perspective, certainly the adoption is much greater, with 30 percent over the last few years,” Stephens says.
That compares with around eight and 13 per cent in the total market over a similar period, she says.

Premium positioning against established rivals
Volvo positions the EX90 against the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Lexus RX, which are priced at similar levels but don’t offer all-electric drive.
“Obviously, the price point is more if you want to buy an electric vehicle. But with EX90 we are creating price parity with a lot of our ICE competitors…removing that barrier,” Stephens says.
The EX90 is described as a true seven-seater and currently the only premium electric SUV with such a configuration available locally. The company doesn’t consider Kia a direct competitor in this segment.
The Current World Luxury Car of the Year offers up to 600km of driving range on the WLTP cycle. With its 800V architecture, it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 22 minutes.
The Performance variant produces up to 500kW and 870Nm, while the Plus delivers 335kW and 670Nm. Both feature twin motor all-wheel drive setups.
Effortless long-distance cruising
Our test drive took the EX90 Performance from Auckland to Waitangi, providing a thorough assessment of its touring capabilities. The SUV proved to be a quick cruiser with ample reserves for effortless overtaking.
On the main highway, the ride is settled thanks to air springs with two settings – Firm and Soft – and road noise is largely subdued. Taking detours off State Highway 1, the EX90 handled winding sections of secondary roads competently.
There’s sufficient steering feel to maintain smooth progress, and the suspension keeps the substantial SUV composed. However, bumpier roads aren’t as well managed, with the large 22-inch wheels transmitting road imperfections and occasionally revealing interior creaks.
Quality cabin with recycled materials

The cabin displays typical Volvo quality, with many materials said to be recycled or having a lower carbon footprint than traditional luxury coverings. The seats are supportive with extensive adjustments, once drivers master the all-in-one control switch.
Cabin functions are managed via a 14.5-inch touchscreen with sufficient shortcuts and dedicated soft buttons for frequently used tasks. However, adjusting mirrors and steering wheel position requires navigating deeper into sub-menus. The system features Google integration and wireless Apple CarPlay.
Like the internal combustion XC90 that remains on sale from $112,990, the seating configuration provides adequate space for all occupants. The second row benefits from a completely flat floor that adds legroom, while adults can fit in the electrically deployed third row for shorter journeys.
Boot space remains useful with all seats in use and becomes generous when the third row is stowed. The EX90 can also tow up to 2200kg.
Software-defined vehicle concept

Volvo describes the EX90 as a software-defined vehicle, with the centralised computing system managing everything from safety and infotainment to battery management. It’s designed for continuous improvement through over-the-air software updates.
The surround view camera system performs well, and the network of cameras, radars and sensors keeps the EX90 alert for potential dangers. The Lidar system available in other markets for enhanced autonomous driving features will not be offered locally.
The EX90 Plus includes a 14.5-inch centre display, 360-degree camera with 3D view, air purifier, digital key, four-zone climate system, head-up display, heated steering wheel and seats, wireless phone charging, and a Bose premium sound system with 20-inch wheels.
The Ultra Performance adds high-definition pixel headlights, air suspension, flush door handles, 22-inch wheels, electrochromic panoramic roof, ventilated front seats with massage function, and a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.
