Forthing launches in New Zealand with Taikon SUV range

Chinese automotive brand Forthing will launch in New Zealand next month with the Taikon medium SUV, offering both Super Hybrid and full electric powertrains across two trim levels.
The Taikon range will be available from 17 April 2026, with Luxury and Exclusive variants in both powertrain options. The launch marks the entry of another Chinese brand into the New Zealand market, backed by state-owned Dongfeng group.
Todd Groves, General Sales Manager for Forthing NZ, says the brand aims to provide competitive new choices for New Zealand drivers.
“Our role is to bring New Zealanders competitive new choices that make sense for their lifestyle,” Groves says. “The Forthing Taikon, with its compelling blend of design and outstanding value, does exactly that.”

Dual powertrain strategy targets range flexibility
The Taikon electric vehicle (EV) features a 64.4kWh lithium iron phosphate battery delivering more than 400km WLTP range, powered by a 150kW motor producing 240Nm of torque. The EV supports DC fast charging at speeds up to 120kW, charging from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes, while 11kW AC charging provides a full charge in seven hours.
For drivers seeking extended range capabilities, the Super Hybrid variant combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 120kW electric motor. The hybrid system offers electric-only driving for up to 183km or combined range exceeding 1000km.
The hybrid model uses a 31.94kWh battery and can charge via DC fast charging in 30 minutes from 30% to 80% state of charge, with 6.6kW AC charging providing a full charge in 5.5 hours or less.
Established manufacturer enters right-hand drive markets
Forthing is part of the state-owned Dongfeng group, though is expected to land a different product range to that of the Dongfeng-branded cars being distributed here by Armstrongs Distribution. The brand is part of Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor Co., established in 1954 and now focused on new energy vehicles as part of an international expansion strategy. The company operates from Liuzhou in China’s Guangxi province and sells vehicles in more than 100 countries.
ATECO Group Australia has secured the distribution rights and will be supported by the local team in NZ.
All Forthing vehicles in New Zealand will come with a seven-year/200,000km factory warranty, supported by a nationwide dealer network.
Safety and equipment focus

The Taikon has not been officially tested but carries a five-star Vehicle Safety Risk Rating and includes standard safety features across both trim levels, including blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, emergency braking and lane keep assist.
Interior space is a key feature, with more than 1480 litres of boot space when rear seats are folded flat. The Exclusive variant adds features including a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging and electric tailgate.
Both variants feature an 8.8-inch instrument cluster and 14.6-inch central display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The Taikon measures 4600mm in length with a 2715mm wheelbase and rides on 235/55 R19 tyres. Kerb weight is 1820kg for both powertrain options.
Forthing NZ says further details on dealer network locations, pricing and full specifications will be announced shortly. Interested buyers can register at www.forthing.co.nz for updates.
