BYD launches Shark 6 Performance and Seal 06 Touring

BYD New Zealand has launched two new models designed specifically for local market needs: the Shark 6 Performance ute and the Seal 06 Touring plug-in hybrid wagon.

The launches reinforce BYD’s focus on New Zealand customer feedback, with both vehicles addressing specific requests from local buyers for enhanced capability and efficiency.

Shark 6 Performance targets rural and commercial users

The Shark 6 Performance builds on the existing Shark platform with significant upgrades driven by New Zealand customer demands. Power output increases to 350kW, up 30kW from the Shark 6 Premium, while torque rises to 700Nm – an additional 50Nm.

Most significantly for commercial users, towing capacity increases to 3500kg, meeting the benchmark for serious work applications. However, payload drops by 60kg to 930kg due to the additional weight of the upgraded powertrain.

The enhanced specifications are designed for farm tracks, forestry roads, beaches and work sites, with improved drivetrain tuning for demanding conditions while maintaining BYD’s new energy technology benefits.

BYD New Zealand General Manager Warren Willmot says the upgrades reflect direct customer input.

“Kiwis asked us for more towing, more power and tougher off-road performance, and that’s exactly what the Shark 6 Performance delivers,” he says.

The Shark 6 Performance is priced at $76,990 plus on-road costs, while the existing Shark 6 Premium remains available from $69,990 plus on-road costs. First deliveries begin in May, timed to align with dairy sector cashflow including Fonterra payout season.

Drivers should note that a New Zealand Class Two licence is required for towing loads over 2500kg.

Seal 06 Touring offers long-range efficiency

The Seal 06 Touring Premium targets families and businesses seeking efficiency and space. Powered by BYD’s DM 5.0 Super Hybrid technology, the wagon delivers a projected driving range of over 1000km, with WLTP equivalent testing estimating up to 1300km under combined test conditions.

The system combines a high-efficiency 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with 46% thermal efficiency, an electric motor, and BYD’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery technology.

With its 19kWh battery, the Seal 06 Touring offers up to 100km of electric-only driving in test conditions, suitable for daily commuting with zero tailpipe emissions.

Cargo space totals 670 litres, expanding to 1535 litres with rear seats folded. The vehicle features roof rails, a powered tailgate and a 2790mm wheelbase.

Priced at $54,990 plus on-road costs, the Seal 06 Touring is positioned as an alternative to sport utility vehicles (SUVs) for active families, fleet customers and regional drivers.

Customer-focused strategy

Willmot says both launches demonstrate BYD’s commitment to addressing real-world New Zealand requirements.

“New Zealanders don’t want compromise—they want vehicles that actually fit how they live and work,” he says.

“At the same time, families and businesses told us they wanted to drive further while spending less, and the Seal 06 Touring does that better than anything else in its class. These two vehicles show BYD is listening and, more importantly, acting on what New Zealand really needs.”

The Seal 06 Touring Premium is available to order now with deliveries starting towards the end of June. The Shark 6 Performance is also available to order with first arrivals from May.

BYD says further announcements are expected later this year as it continues expanding its New Zealand lineup, including upcoming models capable of ultra-fast charging at up to 1000kW.

BYD is currently the largest supplier of plug-in vehicles to the New Zealand Government.
