Forthing launches in New Zealand with $43k EV
Chinese automotive brand Forthing has launched in New Zealand with the Taikon SUV, offering both electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid powertrain options through a four-dealer network managed by the Ateco Group.
The Taikon range is priced from $39,990 to $47,990 plus on-road costs, positioning it as a value offering in the medium SUV segment. The brand will initially operate through dealerships in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch.
Todd Groves, General Sales Manager of Forthing NZ, says the launch represents a compelling new choice for local buyers.
“Our role is to bring New Zealanders competitive new choices that make sense for their lifestyle,” Groves says. “The Forthing Taikon, with its compelling blend of design and outstanding value, does exactly that.”

Dealer network spans main centres
The initial dealer network comprises Smith Motor Group in Auckland central, Winger in Hamilton, Automarque in Wellington, and Euromarque in Christchurch. Groves says expansion is planned to include North Shore, West Auckland, Tauranga, and Dunedin locations, though specific dealers for these areas have not been announced.
Forthing is owned by Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor Co., a state-owned Chinese manufacturer established in 1954. The company operates across more than 100 countries and employs over 6550 staff from a 3.45 million square metre facility in Liuzhou, Guangxi province.
Two powertrain options available

The EV variants start at $42,990 for the Luxury and $47,990 for the Exclusive. These models feature a 150kW/240Nm front-mounted motor paired with a 64.4kWh battery, delivering more than 400km WLTP range. Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes 30 minutes.
The Taikon range also includes Super Hybrid options, with the Luxury at $39,990 and the Exclusive variant at $44,990. The Super Hybrid combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 120kW/240Nm electric motor and 31.9kWh battery, offering pure electric driving for up to 183km and a combined range exceeding 1000km.
Both powertrains share the same equipment levels across Luxury and Exclusive variants. Standard features include a 10.25-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED lighting, 19-inch wheels, and a comprehensive safety suite with Level 2+ driver assistance systems.
Exclusive models add a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, power tailgate, and 360-degree camera system. All variants can tow 1500kg braked or 750kg unbraked.
The Taikon has been assigned a five-star Vehicle Safety Risk Rating (VSRR) in New Zealand, though ANCAP testing has not yet been completed. All models are covered by a seven-year/200,000km factory warranty, with an eight-year/200,000km battery warranty for EV variants.
Groves says additional models are planned for the next two years, giving customers more choice across multiple segments.
“As we establish the brand in New Zealand, we’re also preparing to introduce additional new models over the next two years, giving customers even more choice across multiple segments,” he says.
The Taikon range is available for immediate delivery from Forthing dealerships.
