Hyundai unveils Ioniq 3 compact electric hatchback
Hyundai has unveiled the Ioniq 3, a compact electric hatchback developed primarily for the European market, though its New Zealand release remains unconfirmed.
The new model introduces what Hyundai calls an “Aero Hatch” design approach, combining aerodynamic efficiency with interior space optimisation. The company claims a drag coefficient of 0.263, while the distinctive roofline aims to maximise headroom for front and rear passengers.

Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) using a 400-volt electrical architecture, the Ioniq 3 will be offered with two battery configurations targeting different range requirements.
The standard range version is expected to deliver up to 344km on the WLTP cycle, while a long-range variant targets up to 496km. Both versions use a 100kW front motor producing 250Nm of torque.
Fast-charging capability allows the battery to recharge from 10 to 80 percent in around 29 minutes under ideal conditions, according to Hyundai.
Interior space and technology focus

Despite its compact footprint, Hyundai says the Ioniq 3 offers generous interior space through a flat floor design and long wheelbase. The company describes its “Furnished Space” design philosophy as creating an interior that feels more like a living space than a traditional vehicle cockpit.
Boot capacity is rated at 441 litres, supported by additional underfloor storage compartments.
Technology centres around Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect infotainment system, based on Android Automotive OS. The system includes large digital displays and features such as Digital Key 2, vehicle-to-load capability, and an integrated EV route planner.
Safety equipment includes Hyundai’s SmartSense suite with Highway Driving Assist 2, blind-spot monitoring, and remote parking functions.
The Ioniq 3 will be produced in Turkey as part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to expand its electric vehicle line-up for urban and family buyers.
A Hyundai NZ spokesperson says the model’s local availability remains under consideration.
“IONIQ 3 is still to be confirmed for local release but we are very excited by its potential for the New Zealand market,” the spokesperson says.
