MG4 Urban EV arrives for test drives nationwide

MG Motor New Zealand has confirmed its most affordable electric vehicle (EV), the MG4 EV Urban, is now available for test drives at dealerships nationwide from May 1.

Priced at $38,990 plus on-road costs, the Urban variant represents MG’s entry-level EV offering and is positioned to broaden access to electric mobility for New Zealand drivers.

Dean Sheed, Country Business Manager for MG Motor New Zealand, says the model addresses growing interest in EVs amid rising fuel costs.

“The MG4 has been a strong performer in New Zealand and the UK, showing there’s real demand for practical, affordable EVs, and the MG4 EV Urban builds on this by giving even more local drivers a way into electric mobility,” Sheed says.

“Given current world events and skyrocketing local fuel prices, we are seeing a new cohort of motivated drivers wanting to explore what an EV could look like in their life.”

Technical features target efficiency

The MG4 EV Urban uses MG’s 6-in-1 electric drive system, which integrates multiple components into a single front-wheel-drive unit. The company says this design reduces system weight and increases passenger and luggage space by 20% compared to the standard MG4.

The model includes a high-efficiency heat pump that MG claims delivers more than 65% electrical system efficiency, designed to maintain performance across New Zealand’s varied climates.

The Urban comes with a 54kWh battery and supports 150kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10–80% recharge in around 30 minutes according to MG specifications.

MG has also re-engineered the torsion bar rear suspension for the electric platform, which the company says improves space efficiency while maintaining handling balance and enabling tighter turning circles.

The model includes MG Pilot driver assistance features and accommodates four adults with flexible luggage capacity.

Warranty and availability

The MG4 EV Urban will be available in a selection of exterior colours and is backed by MG’s 10-year warranty when serviced within the brand’s national dealer network.

MG says the model has been designed for New Zealand driving patterns, with many local drivers travelling modest daily distances.
