Toyota’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant of the Hilux has achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating, matching the safety performance of its diesel hybrid counterparts.

The electric ute scored 84% in Adult Occupant Protection, 89% in Child Occupant Protection, 82% in Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 84% in Safety Assist. These scores carry over from the diesel hybrid models, which first achieved the five-star rating in December 2025.

The ANCAP rating applies to all three Hilux BEV models confirmed for the New Zealand market: the SR Dual Cab Utility, SR Dual Cab Chassis, and SR5 Dual Cab Utility.

Australian pricing offers local guide

While Toyota New Zealand has confirmed the Hilux BEV for local release, the company remains tight-lipped on pricing. However, Australian market data provides useful context for potential New Zealand buyers.

The Hilux BEV launched in Australia this month with the entry-level SR Dual Cab Utility starting from A$74,990 plus on-road costs.

Australian pricing shows the BEV commands a significant premium over diesel variants. The jump from the diesel SR 4×4 double-cab pickup with 48V mild hybrid (A$59,490) to the BEV SR pickup (A$76,490) represents roughly a 29% increase.

At the SR5 level, the premium is slightly lower, with the BEV priced at A$82,990 compared to A$65,990 for the diesel 48V automatic – around a 26% increase.

Toyota New Zealand may choose different positioning for the local market, and the New Zealand range may not mirror Australia’s specification exactly. Local pricing and specification details are expected to be announced closer to the model’s New Zealand launch.
