MG MGS6 EV detailed in Australia ahead of NZ arrival
MG’s next premium electric SUV has been fully detailed at its Australian launch, providing a clear indication of what New Zealand buyers can expect when the MGS6 EV arrives locally.
MG New Zealand is yet to confirm local specifications or timing, with a company spokesperson saying they “were not in a position to share details at this stage, but anticipate will do so in the near future.” However, MG’s recent pattern of following Australian launches suggests a New Zealand introduction is likely a matter of when rather than if.
The MGS6 EV slots above the MGS5 EV in MG’s Australian lineup and represents the brand’s third all-electric model to launch there this year. At 4708mm long, it targets the competitive mid-size electric SUV segment currently dominated by the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7.

Two variants with strong performance credentials
The Australian range comprises two variants. The Essence RWD opens at A$49,990 driveaway with a single rear motor producing 180kW, delivering 0–100km/h acceleration in 7.3 seconds and a WLTP range of 530km.
The Essence AWD at A$56,990 driveaway adds a second motor for 266kW combined output, reducing the 0–100km/h time to 5.1 seconds while range drops to 485km. Both versions support 144kW DC charging, taking the battery from 10–80% in 38 minutes, and include heat pump technology, one-pedal driving mode and adjustable regenerative braking.
Practicality features include a 581-litre boot, an 86-litre frunk on the RWD (67 litres on the AWD), and 1690 litres of cargo space with rear seats folded. Towing capacity is rated at 750kg unbraked and 1500kg braked.
Standard equipment includes a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, 10.25-inch driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 50W wireless charging, and an 11-speaker audio system. Heated and ventilated vegan-leather seats, heated outer rear seats, and MG’s full Pilot driver assistance suite complete the specification.

Estimated New Zealand pricing
Historical pricing patterns suggest where the MGS6 EV might land in New Zealand. The MGS5 EV costs A$40,490 driveaway in Australia and $44,990 plus on-road costs here, while the MG4 Urban starts at A$31,990 across the Tasman and $38,990 plus on-road costs locally.
In both cases, New Zealand pricing sits around $4000–$4500 above the Australian driveaway figure before on-road costs are added. Applying this pattern to the MGS6 EV suggests an indicative local entry point around $54,000–$55,000 plus on-road costs for the RWD variant, with the AWD likely reaching the low-to-mid $60,000s plus on-road costs.
These figures are estimates only and local specification could differ from the Australian models.
Brand positioning considerations

The MGS6 EV’s estimated pricing creates potential overlap with MG’s premium IM sub-brand. The IM6, positioned as MG’s upmarket offering similar to Lexus within Toyota, opens at $66,900 plus on-road costs and climbs to $89,900.
If the MGS6 EV AWD reaches the low-to-mid $60,000s as estimates suggest, it would begin to crowd the entry-level IM6. This gives MG incentive to keep MGS6 EV pricing in check to maintain clear differentiation between its mainstream and premium ranges.
The MGS6 EV would compete directly with the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 in New Zealand’s established mid-size electric SUV segment, with the pricier Zeekr 7X also a consideration for buyers.
This story will be updated once MG New Zealand confirms its local plans for the MGS6 EV.
