Chery confirms diesel PHEV ute for NZ

Chery New Zealand has confirmed its upcoming plug-in hybrid ute will launch locally in early 2027, becoming one of the first diesel-electric plug-in hybrid offerings in the competitive dual-cab segment.

Currently known as the KP31, the double-cab ute combines a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which Chery claims is around 10% more efficient than a conventional diesel powertrain.

The ute will match key segment benchmarks with a 1000kg payload and 3500kg braked towing capacity.

Chery says the production model will closely resemble the KP31 concept vehicle revealed earlier this year, although it will be slightly smaller. While the concept measured 5610mm long, the production version has been confirmed at 5450mm in length.

Chery Australia and New Zealand chief operating officer Lucas Harris says the diesel plug-in hybrid drivetrain would provide a key point of difference in the market.

“We’re incredibly excited to confirm our ute will be coming to the New Zealand market.

“It’s riveting to be the first brand to offer a diesel PHEV in the dual-cab ute class, which will be our key point of difference compared to the competition,” Harris says.

A petrol-powered version of the ute is also scheduled to join the New Zealand line-up later in 2027.

The announcement marks Chery’s entry into the highly competitive ute segment, where it will compete against established players including the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max and a growing number of electrified ute offerings.
