Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) chief executive Dr Marcos Pelenur will step down later this year after two years in the role.

Pelenur, who joined the Crown entity in September 2023, will remain chief executive until September before moving into a new role in the infrastructure sector.

EECA board chair Elena Trout thanked Pelenur for his leadership and contribution to the organisation.

“Marcos has challenged us to think differently about how we deliver impact for New Zealanders,” Trout says.

“He has led EECA through a significant strategic reset, sharpening our focus on the challenges and opportunities facing energy users today, while positioning the organisation to support a more resilient, secure and affordable energy system.”

Trout says Pelenur played a key role in advancing discussion around New Zealand’s future electricity system, including the role of distributed energy resources and solar generation.

“In particular, I would like to acknowledge his leadership in advancing understanding of the potential for a smarter electricity system that embraces distributed flexibility, solar generation and supporting infrastructure, enabling New Zealanders to use energy more efficiently and reduce costs.”

She says EECA also strengthened its commercial capability during his tenure, including exploring new financing models and building stronger links between the finance and energy sectors.

“Marcos has been a tireless advocate for both EECA’s mission and its people. He leaves EECA with a clear direction and a strong foundation for the future.”

“On behalf of the Board, I thank Marcos for his vision and commitment, and wish him every success in the future.”

Recruitment for a new chief executive will begin shortly.
