BMW X5 goes electric with 800km range
BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, headlined by a new battery electric iX5 variant offering more than 800km of WLTP driving range.
The new X5 will be offered with petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) powertrains, marking the first time the luxury SUV has been available in fully electric form.
The iX5 60 xDrive is powered by either a 141kWh or 144kWh battery pack, depending on market, delivering 425kW and 805Nm. BMW claims it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds while travelling more than 800km on a single charge (WLTP).
The PHEV X5 50e xDrive pairs a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 360kW and 700Nm.
Conventional powertrains remain available, with the X5 40 xDrive using a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol six producing 294kW and 540Nm, while the diesel variant combines a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six with a 48V mild-hybrid system for outputs of 210kW and 670Nm.
All models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
BMW has also confirmed development of a hydrogen-powered iX5, although the model is not expected to be offered in New Zealand in the near future.
The fifth-generation X5 adopts BMW’s latest Neue Klasse-inspired design language, featuring slimmer “double-X” headlights, flush door handles and a full-width rear light bar.
Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned with a new four-spoke steering wheel, digital instrument display and central infotainment screen. Buyers will also be able to option a passenger display integrated into the dashboard.
BMW New Zealand specifications have yet to be confirmed, although BMW Australia has announced all local models will receive the M Sport package as standard, adding M alloy wheels, M brakes, an aerodynamic body kit and adaptive suspension. A similar specification is expected for New Zealand.
