GWM reveals updated Tank 300 with new plug-in hybrid option

GWM has unveiled an updated version of its Tank 300 SUV in China, introducing a new plug-in hybrid powertrain alongside larger dimensions and a range of design and technology updates.

Images released by GWM, together with filings submitted to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), show the 2027 Tank 300 has grown in every dimension.

The updated model is 126mm longer, 54mm wider and 24mm taller than the current vehicle, while its wheelbase has increased by 260mm. The longer wheelbase and reduced front and rear overhangs are expected to improve off-road capability.

Styling changes are relatively minor, with the most noticeable being new “TANK” lettering across the front grille.

The Chinese-market model also features a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor to support advanced driver assistance systems, although it is unlikely LiDAR-equipped variants will be offered in New Zealand.

The biggest mechanical change is the introduction of GWM’s Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid system.

The new powertrain combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric drivetrain powered by a 59.6kWh battery.

It joins the existing Hi4-T plug-in hybrid system, which was recently introduced in New Zealand.

Unlike the Hi4-T, which uses a traditional mechanical four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case and locking differentials, the Hi4-Z features an electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system.

GWM says both plug-in hybrid systems, along with conventional petrol powertrains, will continue to be offered globally as part of the Tank 300 line-up.
