Tesla has become the first carmaker focused solely on battery-electric vehicles to build 10 million vehicles.

The milestone vehicle, reportedly a black Model Y, rolled off the production line at Tesla’s Fremont factory in California this week.

“Produced our 10 millionth Tesla globally at Fremont Factory this week! Only six years ago, Fremont Factory made our one millionth vehicle,” chief executive Elon Musk says in a post on X.

Tesla delivered its first Roadster in 2008 and began producing the Model S at its Fremont factory in 2012. Production accelerated following the launch of the Model 3 and Model Y, as well as the opening of factories in Shanghai, Berlin and Texas.

The company built its nine millionth vehicle at its Shanghai factory in December 2025, meaning the latest one million vehicles were produced in about seven months.

Chinese rival BYD surpassed 10 million new energy vehicles in 2024, but that figure includes both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models. Tesla’s production has been exclusively battery-electric vehicles.
