Hyundai’s tiny electric workhorse moves closer to production

Hyundai’s next commercial vehicle is rather smaller than a Staria Load. It also has three wheels.

The Korean manufacturer is developing the E3W, a compact electric vehicle designed for passenger transport, deliveries and emergency-response duties in congested cities. It’s being created with Indian motorcycle and three-wheeler specialist TVS Motor Company, which will also handle manufacturing and local sales. The E3W was a small part of the CEO Investor Day presentation the company recently held.

The E3W first appeared as a concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025, but has since progressed beyond the motor-show stage. Hyundai and TVS signed a formal development agreement in April 2026, confirming plans to engineer, test and put the vehicle into mass production.

India will be its first market, with locally sourced components intended to keep production costs down and simplify parts supply. Exports to additional markets are planned, although Hyundai has not announced which countries will receive it.

Three-wheeled passenger and delivery vehicles play a big role across India, Asia and Africa, where they’re widely used as taxis and for last-mile logistics. The E3W is effectively a modern electric interpretation of the motorised rickshaw.

Its compact body has been designed around those working conditions. Hyundai says the production vehicle will feature adaptive ground clearance to cope with flooded roads during India’s monsoon season, along with enhanced cooling for tropical climates.

The steeply angled windscreen is intended to provide good forward visibility, while the flat floor and extended wheelbase should improve driver comfort. Inside, there’s a phone holder and pegboard-style panels that allow operators to add storage or equipment suited to the job.

Hyundai envisages several configurations, including passenger transport, courier work and a rapid-response emergency vehicle. The original concept also included a folding seat arrangement intended to improve access for wheelchair users.

No battery capacity, driving range, motor output or payload figures have been released. Pricing and a production date are also still under wraps, although the latest appearance during Hyundai’s 2026 investor presentation suggests development is moving along.

A four-wheeled E4W concept was displayed beside the E3W in 2025, although Hyundai and TVS have so far formalised production plans only for the three-wheeler.

And yes, Hyundai has even shown a sporty-looking version wearing Performance Blue paint and a substantial rear wing. An E3W N might be stretching things, but stranger Hyundai projects have made production.
